NordHUD Is Live
After months of wrestling with three million road segments, NordHUD is finally on the App Store. Download NordHUD from the App Store
What it is
A heads-up display that shows your speed and the speed limit. Reflected on your windshield and works completely offline. That's it.
Why we built it
Most cars don't have a heads-up display. The ones that do cost extra or come only in higher trims. NordHUD turns any car into one with just your phone and your windshield.
Every HUD app I tried was either cluttered with features I didn't need, useless the moment I lost signal, or hammering my battery with constant server calls.
Most speed limit apps ping an API every few seconds. No signal = no speed limits. And your battery drains while you drive.
NordHUD keeps the speed limit data on your device. One download, then it works anywhere — tunnels, forests, mountain roads, ferry crossings. No network needed. No constant API calls. Your battery stays alive for the actual trip.
The hard part
Getting accurate offline speed limits turned out to be a bit of a mess. I wrote about the technical journey in Part 1 if you want the full story.
Short version: OpenStreetMap has the data, but extracting and composing it in a way that actually works while driving took more iterations than then you might have guessed.
What's next
Speed packs for the Nordics are live now provided as in app purchases — Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland. More regions rolling out soon. USA and Canada layouts are already in the app, just waiting for their speed packs.

If your car doesn't have a HUD, give it a try!
